For Hallow's Eve...

... I have decided to bring to you, courtesy of Empire Magazine, what they have selected to be the most terrifying scenes from films of all time.

1. The Undead
The Most Terrifying Movie Scenes Ever | Zack Snyder's Dawn Of The Dead
Zack Snyder's Dawn Of The Dead
For all the existential terror instilled by George A. Romero's zombies (“Is that all there is?” “Are they us?” etc. etc.), it took tyro Canadian director Zack Snyder to really give the groaning undead a kick up the decaying backside and make them truly terrifying. Why? Because they ran. And they were nasty. No longer could you simply and serenely evade zombies while on a pleasant stroll through the park – now the bastards came at you with the force of a ten-ton truck. It's the opening sequence of Snyder's 2004 debut, though, that really unsettles – beginning with a creepy and bloody attack by a little girl on the unsuspecting husband of Sarah Polley's heroine, Anna, and ending with society falling apart. All in less than nine minutes. Whether it's Polley looking in shock as a poor girl gets ripped apart on a bus by savage ghouls, or the pyres of smoke and flame that belch into the air as petrol stations and power plants explode, or Snyder's disorienting placement of a camera behind the bumper of Polley's car, making it float through the carnage, this is truly destabilising and discombobulating stuff.

2. The Satanic

The Most Terrifying Movie Scenes Ever | The Omen
The Omen
The genius of Richard Donner's classic tale about the rise of the antichrist is that, despite the clearly supernatural elements that surround the story, demonic histrionics are conspicuous by their absence. There are no glowing eyes here, no guttural voices, no hideous make-up jobs. Which, in a way, makes the sequence where Lee Remick's Cathy meets her doom somehow even more affecting. Having survived one Satanic attempt on her life, Cathy is getting changed in her hospital room when the door opens silently behind her. A figure, out of focus, approaches. Jerry Goldsmith's portentous soundtrack builds. And, then Cathy turns to face her killer: her trusted nanny, Mrs. Baylock (Billie Whitelaw) who is, of course, an agent of Satan. And, as Goldsmith's sinister choir kicks in, it's the eyes that get us. They may not be glowing, but when director Richard Donner cuts to a close-up of Whitelaw's blazing, insane, infernally committed eyes, it's a vision that bores deep into the recesses of your brain and refuses to leave. There are more spectacular moments in The Omen – David Warner's sensational flying head, of course – but none that scare so profoundly .

3. Ghost Scenes
The Most Terrifying Movie Scenes Ever | Poltergeist
Poltergeist
If there's one thing that movies have taught us, it's that clowns are not to be trusted. They wear make-up – what are they hiding? They drive cars that fall apart – who would do that? And, crucially, they're not funny. And they're also utterly, utterly terrifying – and never more so than in the standout scene from Tobe Hooper's 1981 belter. And, for a movie filled with great scenes, it takes something special to stand out. And that's exactly what the attack of the clown doll – the malevolent little bastard that comes to life and attacks Robby Freeling at the end of the movie, when the Freelings and the audience have been assured that their possessed house “is clean” - is. From the horrible, insane leer on the clown's plastic face, to its deranged laughter as it tries to strangle young Robby, it's the stuff of nightmares... especially when it lunges at him from under the bed, that favoured hiding place of boogeymen and ghosts.

4. Monster Movies
The Most Terrifying Movie Scenes Ever | Jaws
Jaws
Hey, a shark's not a monster! No fair, put this in Non-Horror! Well, yes, a shark isn't a monster, but in Steven Spielberg's wonderful sophomore effort, that's exactly what it is. It's a terrifying, lurking, ravenous, unseen threat that will bite your toes off if you go into the water. It's the Boogeyman with fins. Want further proof? Take the scene in Halloween where Donald Pleasance says that Michael Myers has 'black eyes... the Devil's eyes' – not a million miles away from Quint's speech about 'lifeless eyes... black eyes... like a doll's eyes' here. But the most terrifying scene? Well, Ben Gardner's floating head has been done. The bigger boat where Bruce rears his toothy noggin out of the water and scares the shit out of Brody? Done. But there's nothing more primal than the thought of going for a midnight swim and then being grabbed from underneath by something with more teeth than a Sky News presenter, and then tossed around like a ragdoll. So, for that reason we're going for the opening scene, when Susan Backlinie goes skinny-dipping and ends up becoming the meat in a tooth sandwich. And notice this: John Williams' score is largely absent from the scene. It's just splashing and screaming and gurgling, and the unsettling clang of a nearby buoy.

5. Slasher/Psycho
The Most Terrifying Movie Scenes Ever | Scream 2
Scream 2
A superior film to the original Scream – perhaps because Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson had the confidence now to do whatever they wanted – Scream 2 features one of the most superbly orchestrated death sequences this side of Dario Argento or Brian De Palma. About halfway through, as Randy (Jamie Kennedy), Dewey (David Arquette) and Gale (Courteney Cox) discuss their options in a grassy park, they receive a call from the taunting Ghostface. Randy takes the call and tries to keep Ghostface on the line as Dewey and Gale keep an eye out – but it ends badly for Randy when, out of nowhere, Ghostface emerges from a van behind him, yanks open the door, drags him in and butchers him. The scene scares for several reasons: it happens in broad daylight, which is usually a no-no especially when it comes to generating suspense. It's a masterclass in misdirection – you expect something to happen to Dewey or Gale, but not to Randy. And lastly, unusually for a slasher film, you actually feel an emotional connection to a likeable character, and therefore pain at his untimely demise. Especially since he knew all the rules – with Randy dead, all bets are off.

6. Sci Fi/Fantasy
The Most Terrifying Movie Scenes Ever | Event Horizon
Event Horizon
Paul W.S. Anderson is a much-maligned director, but on Event Horizon he showed that he could conjure up a scare as efficiently and creatively as some of the true horror masters. Most notably in the sequence where Sam Neill's Dr. William Weir ? racked by grief, and tormented by the ship that he built ? receives a visit from the ghost of his dead wife, while crawling around the claustrophobic corridors of the Event Horizon. We've already seen Claire once before, with her haunting black eyes and sing-song voice, and don't particularly want to see her again. Neither does Weir, and that's why this scene is such a triumph, with Anderson using light (as the sickly green lights of the corridor fluctuate wildly, creating a sense of deep unease) and sound to create palpable tension. We know that she's coming, Weir knows that she's coming, and even so, when she does, it still scares the bejesus out of us. Anderson, sad to say, hasn't hit heights like this since.

7. Non Horror
The Most Terrifying Movie Scenes Ever | The Dead Zone
The Dead Zone
Technically speaking, of course, you'd expect a David Cronenberg film, based on a book by Stephen King, to be a horror. But The Dead Zone – despite featuring a sub-plot about a serial killer – isn't, strictly speaking, a horror, but instead a psychological thriller in the truest sense of the term (before it became a cop-out phrase for directors who didn't want to demean themselves by calling their horror films 'horror films'). It's also not that great – stilted, episodic and sloth-like. But it's got one truly terrifying sequence which, given the current state of the world and the debate about the importance of faith to the President of the United States, may even be as prescient as the film's hero, the visionary Johnny Smith (Christopher Walken). In a flash-forward when he finally grasps hands with oily politician Greg Stillson (Martin Sheen), Johnny sees a terrifying glimpse of what will be: the evangelical Stillson, putting the mentalist in 'fundamentalist', now President, ranting and raving about his destiny – which is to nuke Russia right off the face of the map. It's not the way that Stillson bullies his VP into placing his hand on the nuclear briefcase's scanner that sends shivers down the spine – but the way that, after the deed has been done, a peaceful, beatific Stillson greets his horrified aides with a self-satisfied grin and the immortal words, 'The missiles are flying, gentlemen. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.' What would Jed Bartlet think?

Mamma Mia! Breaks UK Film Record

Mamma Mia!
The stage version of Mamma Mia first appeared in 1999

Musical Mamma Mia!, starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, has become the highest-grossing British film at the UK box office.

The film, which features the songs of Abba, has taken £67.2m in the UK since its release in July - and continues to be shown in British cinemas.

It is now the second highest-grossing film in the UK behind Titanic.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which grossed £66.1m, was the previous holder of the British record.

Mamma Mia! could be on its way to beating Titanic's box office haul of £69m as cinema-goers continue to flock to see it.

Now in its 16th week of release in the UK, the film has also become the number one film of the year in 13 countries including Germany, New Zealand, South Africa and Sweden.

Sing-along versions of the film in cinemas have also helped boost the film's success.

"What is interesting is the speed at which it has gotten to this level," David Kosse, president of Universal Pictures International told industry paper Screen International.

"We are ahead of Harry Potter and continue to be ahead of Titanic at this stage, and we think it still has some life in it.

"One driver is the multiple viewings with people going back to see it again and again. It really is happening on a scale that we haven't seen before."

The three women who created the worldwide stage hit - producer Judy Craymer, writer Catherine Johnson and director Phyllida Lloyd, repeated their roles in bringing the musical to the big screen in the British/US collaboration with Universal Pictures.

The rest of the top 10 highest-grossing British films in the UK is completed by the Harry Potter and Bridget Jones franchises, comedy The Full Monty and romantic comedy Love Actually.

The DVD is due to be released on 24th November in the UK and December 16th in the US - I recommend you see this one!

Katy Perry, 'Hot n Cold' & Anyone for Cake?

This week I have had a song going through my head the whole time, since last week's 90210, Katy Perry's new single, 'Hot N Cold' has been on nonstop play on iTunes. My friend had played this song to me a while back when he played the album, 'One of the Boys' but it was not till I listened to the song the whole way through that I realise this could be an even bigger smash than this summer's hit, 'I Kissed A Girl'. So whether it's listening to this at school on my iPod or dancing at a party, this song is fun, fresh and motivational.

After a recent performance of 'I Kissed A Girl' at the MTV Latin Awards, Perry jumped into a giant pink cake and was girl down after all the frosting covering her body had her slipping and falling on stage. 23-year-old Katy was unable to right herself and eventually, the awards show simply cut to commercial when Perry just gave up and decided her best option might just be to remain motionless.

The Best of the 20-21st Century Music: Oasis (1)

Over the coming weeks, I will be naming what I believe to be the best of the centuries, 20 and 21 in all things music. To start things off, one of the greatest written songs, one of those that defined the 90's and will never be forgotten.
Oasis' 'Wonderwall' is as of 2008, 76th in the UK's best selling singles of all time. Released as the third single from (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? in October 1995, “Wonderwall” peaked at number two in the UK Singles Charts and proved to be their American breakthrough, reaching number eight on the Hot 100 and giving them their only top-ten hit in the US thus far.
What made this song memorable? The emotional lyrics (That the fire in your heart is out, I'm sure you've heard it all before, But you never really had a doubt), the smooth guitar riffs, the peak of Britpop or was it a mixture of all this? Did the English people feel they needed a song to represent how they felt at the time?
I believe Oasis had managed to with every word, every strum and beat, what was needed in music. The release in 1995 brings back many memories for those who can remember it, it was when Diana Spencer said the immortal words, "There were three people in my marriage," in that Panorama interview (the most watching TV item in Britain ever!) or when OJ Simpson was given freedom with a 'not guilty' verdict or the death of notorious gang leader, Ronnie Kray.
A lot happened in that year and 'Wonderwall' reverberated through the rest of the 90's and still to the current day.

Up to date, Oasis have just released their new LP, 'Dig Out Your Soul' which went straight to number one, their seventh in a row.

Celebs do Politics: Sarah Silverman for Obama (Plus, polling and debates)

Another comedian trying to do politics... although rather crude at times (within her comedy and this video), Sarah really does say what people are thinking. Beware, the following video may offend some viewers.

So another question for the public... it seems plenty of celebrities are happy enough to endorse Obama, does this help the cause? What right does a celebrity have over the voters of the country and does this in anyway make a dent on the polls?
After Wednesday's final presidential debate at Hofstra University, McCain showed a slightly more aggressive approach than in the previous two debates, is this a sign of weakness?
A current update on polling... Obama is slightly (and I mean slightly) ahead, whoever wins, it will be a narrow margin.
For the debate-

Gossip Girl Stars Talk Politics

Gossip Girl stars Blake Lively & Penn Badgley join a chorus of young voices asking their parents to save their future by voting for Barack Obama. Directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity & Mr and Mrs Smith)
It seems more and more young people are getting excited about voting for the USA Presidential Election, they are becoming excited about voting Obama (not ALL, just a lot!). So political activists 'MoveOn' have produced this video which hopefully will drum the point home, it's not just the teens who need to vote but their parents, is older politics, right politics?

From MoveOn.org
"
What is MoveOn™?

The MoveOn family of organizations brings real Americans back into the political process. With over 3.2 million members across America – from carpenters to stay-at-home moms to business leaders – we work together to realize the progressive promise of our country. MoveOn is a service – a way for busy but concerned citizens to find their political voice in a system dominated by big money and big media.

The MoveOn family of organizations is made up of a couple of different pieces. MoveOn.org Civic Action, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, formerly known just as MoveOn.org, primarily focuses on education and advocacy on important national issues. MoveOn.org Political Action, a federal PAC, formerly known as MoveOn PAC, mobilizes people across the country to fight important battles in Congress and help elect candidates who reflect our values. Both organizations are entirely funded by individuals.

Every member has a voice in choosing the direction for both MoveOn.org Political Action and MoveOn.org Civic Action. Using our ActionForum software, you can propose priorities and strategies. Both organizations also take the initiative to organize quick action on other timely issues that our members care about."

And the video-

Now here is the question, is right that groups such as this are using teens to help with the vote and in such a way as using GG stars... is this not just propaganda? Or is this the undercurrent of teen politics that we have been waiting for? Has this election not stirred more minds to thinking about politics and although to the rest of the world this election seems a little like a dog eat dog competition, are these groups getting it right by using stars in this way?

Britney vs. Take That: The Battle Continues

After the exclusive on 'My Two Pennies' yesterday about album titles from two reigning winners of pop, it has hit entertainment analysts and critics alike.
After confirming their title for their forthcoming album yesterday, Take That are refusing to change the name despite being released on the same date as Britney Spear's new album and having virtually the same title (TT: The Circus, Britney: Circus).
The group will debut their new LP on December 1st, the same as Britney.

Take That's manager has said to the Daily Record that the boyband will not change their current title: "The boys have worked on this for months, like Britney, and we certainly won't be changing the title.
"When you work that far in advance, it's impossible to know what people will call albums. Erasure had an album Circus. The name is not copyrighted.
"I doubt there will be confusion. Fans will either ask for the new record by Take That or Britney Spears."

An insider added: "Britney is not likely to change the title. She announced it two weeks ago. There won't be confusion - Take That are great at what they do and everyone is excited about Britney's comeback."

What do you think of all this? Is a pop conspiracy brewing? Come November 24th (Release of 'Greatest Day' & 'Womanizer') and then December 1st, a war is waging...

Take That: Greatest Day (Pt 2)

For those of us who didn't catch this, this morning, here is a HQ recording of Take That's new single, 'Greatest Day' due for release November 24th to be followed by their new album which was revealed today to be called, 'The Circus'. It seems not only do both Britney's, 'Womanizer' and this come out on the same day but also both their forthcoming albums have similar names (Britney's is without 'The')... one of the biggest pop battles in recent years is about to take place...

I like this song personally with a sound like 'Rule The World' but with a mixture of some modern indie and a stronger rhythm. It's certainly one we are going to be hearing quite a lot of over the coming months.

Take That: Greatest Day

Take That's new single, 'Greatest Day' is due to be played simultaneously across UK radio stations tomorrow (13-10-08) at 8.15 and will then be released on November 24th (in time for the Christmas sales). I'm not really sure what to expect from this new single, I really warmed to Take That with the release of 'Beautiful World' and they showed they can still create fun pop records as well as powerful ballads.
It seems that while in LA, the boys bumped into an old friend, Jason has said “Rob’s looking really well at the moment. We went out for dinner and he was telling us he’s been chilling out and writing a lot, but nothing with us. I don’t know if it’s all about UFOs, but he’ll be bringing something out soon.”
As well as this, Gary has recorded a song with comedian Peter Kay which will feature in new Channel 4 show Britain’s Got The Pop Factor And Possibly A New Celebrity Jesus Christ Soapstar Superstar Strictly On Ice. The show premieres tonight at 8pm.
Get ready for a new pop battle between Take That and Britney's 'Womanizer' (I would prefer Pink to stay at number one!)

Official Video for Britney's 'Womanizer'

Hmmm... I just have not made up my mind yet about Britney's new song. I really like 'Blackout' and songs like 'Radar' and 'Piece of Me' stuck in my head for ages but although 'Womanizer' continues to be as catchy and her other songs, I'm not 100% if it lives up to it's hype.
Anyway, here is the highly anticipated new video (Director's Cut) for 'Womanizer' which aired last night (10-10-08) on ABC's 20/20.

Due for it's digital release in the UK in November followed by her new album, 'Circus' on December 1st.

Fall 2008-2009

*SPOILER ALERT*

It’s that time of year again. The time when the leaves start to fall from the trees and only the smell of warm coffee can wake you up in the morning, of course you would prefer not to leave the house because there is so much new television that you want to watch! (Or is that just me?)
Fall 2008 promises more of the usual sex, scandal, comedy, drama, super heroes and breaking out of prison (against my will Prison Break is STILL on!). Some of the biggest names around are coming back for new seasons, including Lost, Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Heroes, Gossip Girl and Ugly Betty. As well as all these the return of a revamped CSI: Las Vegas (watch Gil Grissom move on being replaced by the Matrix’s Laurence Fishbourne) and it’s sister shows, NY and Miami, along with a sprinkling of NCIS, Without a Trace, Bones, Smallville and Everybody Hates Chris.

2008 also promises some brand new shows including JJ Abrams’ (Lost) Fringe, Alan Ball’s (Six Feet Under) True Blood and a new spinoff , 90210 (yes, Beverly Hills, you got it right!). Plus watch out for Dollhouse, Joss Whedon’s (Buffy) new series in early 2009.

Without further ado, let’s cast our minds back to the beginning of September. While we were making our way back to school with little trepidation, our Stateside friends were gearing up for what was the most talked about show of last Fall, Gossip Girl. However, while the name of the show seems gender specific, it’s actually enjoyable for boys and girls alike. Created and produced by Josh Schwartz (The OC & Chuck), GG follows the lives of Manhattan’s Elite teenagers, living in the Upper East Side. Whether it’s shopping at Mendel’s, drinking at the newest and exclusive bar or having sex in the back of a limo, GG has it all! Despite only ranking in the 20’s in the Nielsen ratings last year, New York Magazine called it “The Best Show Ever!” What one has to bear in mind is that these ratings don’t account for the DVR/TiVo recordings, illegal online views, and the fact that it is the most bought television show on iTunes US! So instead of its average of 2 million in reality its closer to 20! Season two of Gossip Girl has been compared to a teen version of Sex and The City. The CW network’s new tongue in cheek marketing campaign features the stars in various states of undress, with captions of critical jabs from the press like, “Every parent’s nightmare.”
Unfortunately, The CW finds itself in a position of needed change. Last year, only the second year from precursors The WB and UPN, saw the average ratings at 2.3 million. If The CW are going to see the year through they are going to need to reach higher ratings than that, so could they be looking to GG as their last hope? Schwartz doesn’t seem to think so; “That’s on 90210.” Executive Producer Stephanie Savage says, “We just have to keep the show as good as possible, so if something happens, it has a life of its own.” As we watch the events unfold, there is always one thing sure, scandal will ensue. Who is going out with whom? Which of our elite will be the top of the pack? By next week all could change and the Queen of the UES could be at the bottom of the pile.

Gossip Girl, teen drama at it’s best, highly recommended!

Another show returning this year that needs no introduction is Desperate Housewives. Now, I am sure there are some of us who are trying to hide the fact they watch this show religiously. Slowly becoming one of the most watched shows in history with approx 120 million viewers, the story of four women hit our screens five years ago and since then, the secrets of suburbia have never been the same. A cocktail of murder, sex & lies have made this show the phenomenon that it is today. The Season Four finale shook everyone up by fast-forwarding the show five years. So what will life be like on Wisteria Lane in the future? Season Four’s mystery character, Katherine (Dana Delany), is still a resident, and Edie (Nicollette Sheridan) arrives back on the block with her new husband. But things are not simple when it comes to Fairview, and as creator Marc Cherry has said he’s not just a love interest, he’s a guy “who moves onto the street for revenge.” Mother of two, Gabrielle (Eva Longoria) has deglamourised, juggling her blind husband, her two girls and facing the fact that age and life are taking it’s toll. Other news for the new series, did Susan (Teri Hatcher) and Mike (James Denton) split up? Why was she in the arms of another man last season? These questions will all be answered, as it has something to do with a “tragic accident”. I’ve seen the season five premiere and it promises to be the best yet, including all the humour and drama from the past years plus so much more!

Desperate Housewives, dramady perfection, do not miss!

How about something new? Fox’s Fringe, a blend of X Files and Bones from Alias and Lost creator JJ Abrams. Dawson’s Creek veteran, Joshua Jackson plays Peter Bishop, the genius son of another (may I add slightly insane) genius scientist, Walter Bishop. Walter starts with his research into Fringe Science – mind control, psychic powers and teleportation. Thrown together with an FBI agent, they investigate an outbreak of paranormal intrigue known as the “Pattern”. All involved in this show promise that it will not become bogged down by it’s own mythology, meaning there will be plenty of stand alone episodes that cater to the casual viewer. The two hour $10 million pilot was impressive, save the airplane crash at the beginning (Hasn't JJ already done that?). It seems that the dead can be questioned, a disease is eating people alive and robotic arms are being added on people… I certainly was intrigued and find that this perhaps may cater to more than Lost.

Fringe, science fiction too far? I don’t think so.

Beverly Hills, 90210 Fans put your hands up! I don’t think many of us with our Blackberries and mp3 players can successfully say we have paid too much attention to this, but maybe the generation before us? The show that defined a generation is back again. The OC, One Tree Hill & Gossip Girl watchers get ready for the next melodrama, 90210. At the centre of the storm are the Wilsons, who move from Kansas to Beverly Hills after Dad; Harry becomes the principle at West Beverly High. They move in with Harry’s midday drinking mother, Tabitha, plus wife Debbie, all American daughter Annie and adopted son, Dixon. For the older fans, the return of Jennie Garth as Kelly Taylor and Shannen Doherty as Brenda promise to stir up some old memories (plus rumours of other cast members returning!)

90210. Newport, New York, Palm Beach. Beverly Hills is the place to be!

So at the end of the day, you have plenty of choice. Do you want comedy (How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, Chuck, Pushing Daisies), drama (Dirty Sexy Money, Brothers & Sisters, House), sci-fi (Ghost Whisperer, Life on Mars US (remake!), Supernatural)? Whatever your preference, there is ALWAYS something to watch.

Crash: What do you think?

In 2004, Paul Haggis wrote and directed one of the greatest films of the 21st century, Crash. The film was powerful and bought to the forefront of film about dealing with race and gender. It surprisingly won "Best Film" at the Oscars beating "Brokeback Mountain" and went on to have great DVD sales.
Now... four years later, Starz have a new original drama, Crash, made by the producers of the film and starring Dennis Hopper. It's based on the film with similar ideas and characters plus new ones including a Mexican who has illegally crossed the border.
Here's the trailer, what do you think?
